What is bouclé fabric?

Bouclé (from French: "curly" or "looped") is a woven fabric where the threads are looped or curled during weaving, creating a nubby, textured surface. It's different from knitted bouclé (which stretches) — upholstery bouclé is tightly woven for durability. The look is soft and sculptural simultaneously.

Is bouclé practical?

More practical than it looks. The looped texture is naturally forgiving — small dirt particles fall between loops rather than sitting on the surface. For pets, the texture hides hair better than smooth velvet. Bouclé cleans well with a damp cloth and gentle brush. The one bouclé weakness

Looped fabric can snag. Sharp objects — pet claws especially — can catch a loop and pull it. This doesn't unravel the fabric but creates a visible pulled loop. If you have cats or dogs with particularly sharp claws that scratch surfaces, a tighter-woven fabric like Melody or Sorriso is more forgiving.

Bouclé colours: which work best?

Bouclé's texture is already its statement — you rarely need a bold colour on top. The most popular combinations: natural cream (the classic), warm greige, soft blush, and sage green. Navy and charcoal bouclé exist and look interesting but can feel heavier than smooth fabric in the same colour.

Bouclé sofa care

Vacuum regularly with an upholstery brush attachment on low suction. Blot (don't rub) spills immediately. For deeper cleaning, use a dry foam upholstery cleaner — avoid soaking the fabric. Steam cleaning is safe on most bouclé but test a hidden area first. Always check specific care instructions for your fabric grade.
