In most markets, "corner sofa" and "L-shaped sofa" mean the same thing. But there's a useful distinction worth understanding when you're comparing configurations: the angle, the symmetry, and how the two sides relate to each other.
The common definition
Both terms typically describe a sofa with two perpendicular sections — a main sofa and an attached chaise or shorter return section that meets at a corner. The corner piece itself is usually a square module that connects the two arms.
True L-shape vs chaise configuration
A true L-shape has two roughly equal-length sides — say, a 3-seater meeting a 2-seater at 90°. Both sides are fully usable seating. A chaise configuration has one main seating section and one longchair extension — the chaise is deeper than a standard seat (145–165 cm vs 90 cm) but isn't a second sofa. The distinction matters for how many people can sit comfortably.
Which is bigger?
A true L-shape with matching sides (3+3 or 3+2) is typically larger. A chaise/longchair version is more compact for its overall length because one side is a single lying space rather than 2–3 seats. For a 20–25 m² room, a chaise configuration usually fits more comfortably.
Which configuration for which lifestyle?
Families with children or frequent guests: true L-shape (more seats). Couples or individuals who want to stretch out: chaise/longchair (more comfortable lounge space). Home office / reading room: L-shape with a chaise works well for extended single-user seating.
Modular advantage for corner sofas
The biggest challenge with any corner sofa is getting it through the door. A 300 × 220 cm L-shape cannot enter most apartments as a single piece. Furni's modular corner sofas ship as individual modules — each piece fits through any standard 75 cm door. They assemble together on-site in under 30 minutes.
