How to Arrange Furniture Around a Sofa: Living Room Layout Guide

Getting the furniture layout right is one of the most impactful decisions in living room design -- and one of the least discussed. A room with beautiful furniture arranged badly will feel awkward and uncomfortable. The same furniture arranged thoughtfully creates a space that works effortlessly for both daily life and entertaining. Your sofa is always the starting point.

Start with the Sofa: It Drives Everything Else

In virtually every living room, the sofa is the largest piece of furniture and defines the layout. Before placing anything else, determine where the sofa goes. The sofa should: face the room's focal point (fireplace, TV, window with a view), have its back against a wall or floating at least 60cm from the wall, sit parallel or at right angles to the room's main architectural lines (not at a diagonal unless you have a very specific reason). Once the sofa is placed, every other piece of furniture responds to it.

The Classic Layouts

Sofa + 2 armchairs (the conversation triangle): Place the sofa facing the focal point; position an armchair on each side at a slight angle facing inward. This creates an intimate conversation grouping. A round coffee table in the centre completes the arrangement. This works in rooms from 15sqm upward and is perhaps the most versatile layout of all. L-shape or corner sofa (the self-contained arrangement): A corner sofa creates its own conversation zone without needing additional chairs. Place a coffee table in the corner of the L and add a small side table. Best for households where the sofa is the primary seating. Sofa facing sofa (formal symmetry): Two sofas facing each other with a coffee table between them. Very formal and best for rooms that are used primarily for entertaining rather than daily use. Sofa + single armchair (the compact asymmetric): Works in smaller rooms where two armchairs are too much. The single armchair creates visual interest without overwhelming the space.

The Coffee Table Rules

The coffee table is the sofa's closest companion. Get the relationship right: it should sit 35-50cm away from the sofa (close enough to use comfortably, far enough for easy movement). The table height should be within 5cm of the sofa seat height. The table should be approximately 2/3 of the sofa's width. Round tables work better with L-shaped sofas; rectangular tables work better with straight sofas.

Working With the TV

The TV creates a specific challenge. If it's the focal point, the sofa should face it at a comfortable viewing distance (typically 200-400cm depending on screen size). The ideal eye level for TV viewing is at the centre of the screen. Avoid placing the TV on a side wall at a sharp angle from the sofa -- this creates neck strain. If you have both a fireplace and a TV, choose one as the primary focal point and angle the seating toward it.

The Asti's generous corner form is ideal for open-plan living where you need furniture to define zones rather than sit against walls. It works as a natural room divider between living and dining areas.

Creating Zones in Open-Plan Spaces

Open-plan living has become the norm, and the sofa plays a critical role in defining the living zone. Float the sofa: Instead of pushing the sofa against a wall, float it facing the living area. The back of the sofa becomes the natural boundary between the living and dining areas. Use a rug to anchor: A large rug under the sofa and coffee table creates a visual boundary for the seating zone. Let the sofa back define the space: A sofa with a clean, interesting back works as a room divider -- this matters more in open-plan layouts where the sofa back is visible from the kitchen or dining area.
