The most common sofa-buying mistake isn't choosing the wrong colour — it's ordering the wrong size. Here's the exact method we recommend to every Furni customer before they configure their sofa.
Step 1: Measure the room, not just the wall
Don't measure the wall where the sofa will go. Measure the entire room floor plan. You need to know how much space remains when the sofa is in place — enough to walk around, open doors, and not feel closed in.
Minimum walkway clearance: 75 cm. Comfortable walkway: 90 cm. Main traffic route (e.g. to kitchen): 100 cm.
Step 2: Measure the door opening
A sofa that doesn't fit through the door is one of the most expensive furniture mistakes you can make. Measure the clear width of your front door and any internal doors the sofa must pass through. Standard UK/EU door clear width: 75–85 cm. A 3-seater sofa is typically 180–220 cm — it cannot come in as one piece through a standard door.
The modular advantage: all Furni sofas are delivered and assembled from individual modules. Each module is typically 55–95 cm wide. A 3-seater arrives in 3–4 boxes that any front door can take.
Step 3: The tape-on-floor trick
Before ordering, mark out the sofa footprint on your floor with masking tape or painter's tape. Include the depth. Live with it for a day. Walk around it. Sit on a similar-height chair nearby. You'll immediately know if it's too big or could go larger.
Step 4: The golden ratio rule
A sofa should be no more than two-thirds of the wall it sits against. A 400 cm wall looks best with a sofa no wider than 260–270 cm. Wider than two-thirds and the room starts to feel like a waiting room. Narrower than half the wall and the sofa can look lost.
Step 5: Consider the sofa-to-coffee-table gap
Ideal gap between sofa front edge and coffee table: 35–45 cm. Close enough to reach drinks without leaning. Far enough to walk past without shuffling sideways. Factor this into your depth calculations — a sofa 95 cm deep plus 40 cm gap plus 50 cm table = 185 cm total footprint depth.
Measurements to write down before configuring
- Room width and length
- Available wall width (including corner if L-shape)
- Front door clear width and height
- Staircase or lift dimensions if applicable
- Distance from wall to first obstacle (radiator, window sill)
- Ceiling height if considering taller back designs
