How to Style a Corner Sofa: Tips, Ideas and Inspiration
A corner sofa is one of the most rewarding pieces of furniture to style well — but also one of the most unforgiving when it is not styled thoughtfully. Its scale means that a badly styled corner sofa dominates a room and makes it feel cluttered; a beautifully styled one anchors the entire space and makes everything else fall into place. This guide covers every aspect of styling a corner sofa: cushion arrangement, rug placement, throw positioning, side tables, lighting, plants, and how to make the corner feel intentional rather than simply large.
Cushion Arrangements for Corner Sofas
The key difference between styling a straight sofa and a corner sofa is that the corner has both a horizontal run and a vertical stack point — the inside corner where the two sections meet. For the inside corner position, use two or three larger cushions stacked (50x50cm or 60x60cm) to fill the back corner — this makes the junction feel intentional rather than awkward. Along the rest of the sofa, use a diminishing scale: 50x50 cushions near the corner, transitioning to 45x45 or 40x40 toward the ends. A throw draped loosely over the longchair or chaise end adds softness. A good working number for a full corner sofa is six to eight cushions total, including the corner stack.
Merlot Modular Corner Sofa — from EUR 1,490
The Merlot's modular corner configuration lends itself beautifully to the full styling treatment: deep cushion stacks in the inside corner, a mix of textures across the run, and a chunky knit throw draped over the longchair end. The high armrests create natural boundaries that make cushion placement intuitive — the cushions rest against the armrests rather than needing to be propped.
Asti Corner Sofa — from EUR 1,190
The Asti's distinctive profile makes it a striking styling foundation: its shape carries the eye naturally along the full length. Add a large rug that extends beyond all four feet of the sofa, position a floor lamp at the inside corner, and keep the cushion palette to two or three complementary colours for a clean, intentional result.
Rug Placement for Corner Sofas
The most common mistake with corner sofa rug placement is choosing a rug that is too small. A corner sofa typically needs a rug of at least 240x170cm, and in many configurations 270x200cm or larger works better. The rug should extend beyond the front feet of all sofa sections — if the rug only partially covers the sofa's footprint, the arrangement looks unanchored. The ideal position has all sofa feet sitting on the rug, or at minimum all front feet on the rug with only back feet off. Round rugs can work with corner sofas in square rooms — they soften the angular configuration — but rectangular rugs are generally more versatile and provide clearer definition of the seating zone.
Lighting a Corner Sofa Area
Corner sofas benefit from a layered lighting approach. A floor lamp positioned at or just outside the inside corner of the sofa illuminates the whole sitting area from above and creates a warm focal point. A table lamp on a side table at the open end of the sofa — at the longchair or chaise end — gives reading light and balances the floor lamp visually. A pendant light or ceiling fixture centred above the coffee table in front of the sofa anchors the whole arrangement. Avoid relying on overhead central lighting only — it makes the sofa area feel underlit and flat. The floor lamp beside the corner is the single most transformative lighting addition for a corner sofa.
The Coffee Table: Scale and Position
A corner sofa needs a coffee table that respects its scale. Avoid undersized coffee tables — a 90cm round table looks dwarfed by a large L-shaped sofa. A good approach is either a large rectangular or oval table (120cm+ in length) placed in front of the longer run of the sofa, or two smaller tables used together in an asymmetric arrangement. The table should be within comfortable reach from the seated position — 35 to 45cm of clearance between the sofa front and the table edge allows comfortable movement without the table feeling too distant.
