Industrial interior design takes its cues from converted warehouses and factory lofts: exposed brick, concrete, black steel, reclaimed wood and a palette of charcoal, rust and tan. It is one of the most forgiving interior styles to live with, because the raw backdrop hides wear and the furniture does the softening. This guide covers the materials, colours and layouts that make an industrial interior work in an ordinary living room (no warehouse needed), and how to choose an industrial style sofa that is comfortable enough for every evening, not just good in photos.

What is industrial interior design?
The industrial interior grew out of loft living in 1970s New York and London, when artists moved into empty factories and left the structure on show. Instead of hiding beams, pipes and brick behind plaster, they made them the decoration. Today the style means the same thing on a smaller scale: honest materials, visible structure and function first.
- Raw surfaces. Brick (real or brick-slip), concrete or concrete-effect plaster, raw or stained wood.
- Black metal. Steel frames on tables and shelving, Crittall-style glazing, black window frames, metal pendant lamps.
- A muted, warm-dark palette. Charcoal, graphite, warm grey, rust, cognac and black, with off-white to keep it from closing in.
- Open, uncluttered space. Few walls, open shelving instead of closed cabinets, furniture that floats in the room.
- Contrast of rough and soft. Hard backdrop, soft seating. This is where the sofa matters most.
Industrial interior materials: what to use and where
You do not need a single real brick to build an industrial interior. Pick one or two "hard" materials for the shell of the room and let furniture and lighting carry the rest.
| Material | Where it works | Rented-flat alternative |
|---|---|---|
| Exposed brick | One feature wall behind the sofa or TV | Brick-slip panels or a deep terracotta-brown paint |
| Concrete | Floors, a coffee table, plant pots | Microcement-look paint, grey large-format tiles, concrete side table |
| Black steel | Shelving frames, table legs, lamps, curtain poles | Free-standing pipe shelving, black metal floor lamp |
| Reclaimed wood | Dining table, shelves, coffee table top | Oiled oak or dark-stained pine |
| Heavy textiles | Sofa, rug, curtains | Chenille, textured weaves, wool, canvas, vintage rugs |
The classic mistake is stacking all of them at once. Brick, concrete, reclaimed wood and raw steel in a 20 m² room reads as a building site. Choose a lead material (usually brick or concrete), a supporting one (black metal) and add warmth with wood and fabric.
Industrial colour palette
Industrial colour is about depth rather than brightness. A reliable formula is 60% warm off-white or warm grey on walls, 30% charcoal and black in furniture and metal, and 10% accent in rust, cognac or olive.
- Charcoal and graphite are the backbone, on a sofa, an accent wall or window frames. See our charcoal sofa ideas for pairings.
- Warm grey and stone keep a smaller or darker room from feeling heavy.
- Rust, brick and terracotta echo exposed brick and work beautifully as an accent sofa or armchair. Our terracotta sofa ideas show how far you can push it.
- Cognac, tan and khaki add the "old leather" warmth that stops steel feeling cold.
- Black for frames, lamps and hardware. Rarely for walls unless the ceiling is high and the light is good.
How to choose an industrial style sofa
The sofa is the softest object in an industrial room, and also the biggest. It needs to look solid enough to stand up to brick and steel and still be comfortable. Here is what to look for.
A clean, boxy or architectural silhouette
Industrial furniture is functional. Square arms, a straight back and firm, tailored cushions suit it far better than rolled arms, skirts or frills. A low back (around 70 cm) keeps the view to the windows open, which is important in a loft-style layout.
Dark or earthy upholstery
Dark grey, graphite, stone, khaki, cognac-brown or brick red. Leather is the traditional choice, but a dense chenille or textured weave gives the same depth with more comfort, no cracking and no cold seat in winter. All Furni fabrics are OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified.
Firm, lasting comfort
Industrial lines only look right while cushions keep their shape. High-resilience HR35 foam on a solid wood frame holds a crisp profile for years; cheap foam sags into a slouch within a couple of seasons.
Scale that matches an open plan
Open spaces swallow small sofas. A corner sofa or a long modular sofa helps "zone" the living area in an open-plan room, with its back acting as a low wall between the kitchen and the lounge.
The best Furni sofas for an industrial interior
MERLOT Modular Corner Sofa 3-Seater, High Armrests — from €1,913
Low, long and square-armed, with a deep seat. In Retro Bliss 93 dark grey it is the definitive loft sofa; Golden 56 brick picks up an exposed-brick wall. Left or right chaise.
ASTI Corner Sofa 3-Seater — from €1,599
282 × 155 cm, HR 35/38 foam and a solid wood frame. Euphoria chenille in Stone, Olive or Deep Terra brings the depth of leather with a much softer feel.
MERLOT: the modular loft sofa
MERLOT is around 70 cm high, with a straight back and a deep seat, so it sits low against a brick or concrete wall and never blocks a window. The corner version with high armrests has the solid, boxy arms that suit industrial best, while the 3-seater with low armrests gives a lighter, more mid-century line. For the classic loft look choose Retro Bliss 93 dark grey or 85 grey; for warmth, the brown Find Me 6 bouclé reads like worn leather from across the room.
LUGANO in graphite: the statement piece
The LUGANO 3-seater in graphite has a segmented, legless silhouette that contrasts beautifully with straight steel and brick lines. The Wolf graphite fabric is a deep, almost charcoal grey. For a warmer, more "workshop" feel, the khaki LUGANO brings in the military olive tone that sits so well next to black metal.
ASTI: the comfortable corner sofa
If the industrial room is also the family room, ASTI is the practical choice: an L-shape of 282 × 155 cm, HR 35/38 foam and a pilling-resistant chenille. Stone is the safe industrial grey; Deep Terra is the rust option that matches brick.

Low Profile Sofas
MERLOT, PINOT and LUCCA at 67–73 cm high: low silhouettes that keep an open-plan loft feeling open.
Industrial living room layouts
Open-plan loft
Float a corner sofa in the room with its back to the kitchen or dining area, and put a long console or low shelving behind it. Anchor the seating with one large rug (at least 200 × 300 cm) so the front legs of every chair sit on it. Hang one or two big pendants over the coffee table rather than many small ones.
Narrow living room
Put the sofa on the long wall, use slim black metal shelving on the opposite wall and keep the coffee table light (glass and steel or a small concrete drum). A low sofa and dark lower walls with a lighter upper half make the room feel wider.
Styling an industrial interior around the sofa
- Lighting: exposed filament bulbs, enamel factory pendants, an articulated black floor lamp next to the sofa.
- Coffee table: steel frame with a solid wood top, or a concrete or metal drum.
- Rug: a faded vintage or Persian-style rug softens concrete instantly and adds the colour the walls do not have.
- Cushions and throws: wool, canvas, linen and leather-look in rust, cognac, olive and ink. Avoid shiny satin.
- Plants: structural ones such as rubber plant, fiddle-leaf fig, olive tree or cacti, in concrete or black pots.
Industrial overlaps with other styles. Add walnut and tapered legs and you are close to mid-century modern; pare it back and lighten the wood and it drifts towards Japandi. For a softer grey scheme, see our grey living room ideas.
How to choose: industrial sofa checklist
- Measure the room and the doors. Leave 80–90 cm of walkway; check stairwells for corner sofas.
- Pick the silhouette: square arms, straight back, firm cushions, no skirt.
- Choose a dark or earthy colour: dark grey, graphite, stone, khaki, brown or brick.
- Choose a dense fabric: chenille or a textured weave for leather-like depth; a pet-friendly weave if you have a dog or cat.
- Check the build: HR35 foam and a solid wood frame for a shape that lasts.
- Think modular in open plan: a modular system such as MERLOT lets you rebuild the layout later. Our best modular sofas in Europe guide compares the options.
- Order fabric samples and look at them next to your brick, concrete or metal in daylight and in the evening.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between industrial and loft style?
"Loft" describes the space (an open, high-ceilinged former factory), and "industrial" describes the look (raw materials, black metal, dark palette). You can create an industrial interior in any room.
What colour sofa is best for an industrial interior?
Dark grey, charcoal or graphite are the safest choices. Cognac, brown and khaki add warmth, and rust or brick works beautifully as an accent against exposed brick. Avoid pastel and bright white sofas.
Does an industrial style sofa have to be leather?
No. Dense chenille, bouclé and textured weaves give the same depth and are softer, warmer and easier to live with. A brown bouclé or a graphite chenille reads as "industrial" just as well as leather.
Can industrial interior design work in a small flat?
Yes. Choose one hard material (brick or black metal), keep walls warm white or light grey, and use a low sofa in grey or graphite. One feature plus good lighting is enough.
How do I stop an industrial living room feeling cold?
Layer soft textures: a vintage rug, wool throws and a chenille or bouclé sofa. Add warm wood, warm-white 2700K bulbs and a few large plants. The contrast of rough and soft is the whole point of the style.
Which Furni sofa is most industrial?
MERLOT with high armrests in dark grey Retro Bliss 93 is the most classic choice, LUGANO in graphite is the statement piece, and ASTI in Stone is the most comfortable everyday corner sofa.
