Sofa Dimensions Explained: Width, Depth, Height and What They Mean

Every sofa listing includes a list of measurements. Most buyers look at the overall width and stop there. Here is what every dimension actually means for how the sofa fits and feels.

Overall width

The total width from outside armrest to outside armrest. This is what you measure against your wall. Standard 3-seaters: 200-240 cm. With chaise: add 90-110 cm to the main sofa width. Important: leave 5-20 cm between the sofa end and any wall, door or radiator.

Overall depth

The front-to-back measurement of the sofa as it sits in the room. Includes the sofa body. Standard range: 85-100 cm. Deep sofas: 100-120 cm (very loungy feel). This determines how much floor space the sofa takes from front to back.

Seat depth

The usable sitting surface - from the front edge of the seat to the backrest. Different from overall depth. Standard: 55-70 cm. Under 55 cm: you sit close to the front edge, upright posture. Over 70 cm: you need cushions to sit comfortably upright; great for lounging.

Seat height

The distance from the floor to the top of the seat cushion. This determines how easy it is to get up and down. Standard: 44-48 cm. Low profile: 37-42 cm. High (for elderly, mobility): 48-54 cm.

Back height

From the top of the seat cushion to the top of the backrest. Or from the floor, depending on the listing - always check which one. Low back: 65-78 cm from floor. Mid back: 78-90 cm from floor. High back: 90+ cm from floor.

Armrest height

From the top of the seat to the top of the armrest. Standard: 20-28 cm. This affects how the armrest feels as a side support and how useful it is for pushing yourself up.
