Sofa Foam Density: Why HR35 Matters More Than Price

Most sofa buyers focus on fabric, colour and configuration. Almost no one asks about foam density — but it's the single most important factor determining how long a sofa stays comfortable.

What is foam density?

Foam density is measured in kg/m³ — it describes how much foam material is packed into each cubic metre of foam. Higher density = more material = better resilience and longevity. It is not the same as firmness (ILD rating), though denser foams tend to be firmer.

The density breakdown

18–22 kg/m³: Entry-level. Collapses within 2–3 years. Often used in budget furniture and rarely disclosed. 25–28 kg/m³: Acceptable for occasional-use pieces. Will lose 30–40% of support within 5–6 years with regular use. 30 kg/m³: Good for residential use. 8–10 year lifespan with normal use. HR35 (high-resilience, 35 kg/m³): This is the benchmark for quality furniture. 15–20 year lifespan. Used in premium residential and commercial/hospitality settings. 40+ kg/m³: Contract/commercial grade. Beyond what's needed for home use.

HR (high-resilience): what does it mean?

HR foam has an open-cell structure that allows it to compress and fully recover. Cheap foam (not HR-rated) compresses and partially recovers — this is what creates the permanent "dent" effect. An HR35 foam seat should return to full shape after 15 years of regular use.

How we use it at Furni

Back cushions use foam-wrapped polyester fibre fill for a softer, more relaxed feel while maintaining the underlying support.

How to check a sofa's foam specification before buying

Email or call the manufacturer and ask: "What is the foam density in kg/m³ for the seat modules?" If they can't answer or say they don't know, you have your answer. Any quality manufacturer knows exactly what foam is in their product.
