Sofa for an Open Plan Living Room: Zoning and Layout Tips

Open plan living rooms present a unique challenge: the sofa has to define a seating zone without the benefit of walls. Get it right and the space flows beautifully. Get it wrong and it feels like furniture scattered in a warehouse.

The sofa's job in an open plan space

In a traditional room, the sofa sits against a wall and the room defines its placement. In an open plan space, the sofa creates the room. Its positioning defines where "the living area" begins and ends. This is usually done by placing the sofa facing away from the kitchen/dining area, with its back acting as a visual divider.

Back-facing configuration

The most common and effective open plan arrangement: sofa parallel to, or slightly angled toward, the TV wall, with the back of the sofa facing the kitchen or dining area. The sofa back (typically 80–90 cm from floor to top) creates a soft visual boundary. A console table behind the sofa reinforces the zone boundary while adding functionality.

Island/floating configuration

A sofa placed in the centre of the room, not touching any wall, works well in very large open plans (30+ m²). The key is ensuring walkways around the sofa of at least 90 cm on all sides. A large rug underneath the sofa anchors the arrangement and prevents it looking displaced.

U-shape for large open plans

A U-shape sofa defines the living zone decisively. In a 40+ m² open plan, a U-shape (320 × 220 cm+) with a large rug becomes the centrepiece. The enclosure creates intimacy within the open space. Our modular systems build U-shapes from 320 × 180 cm upward.

Colour in open plan

In an open plan, the sofa is visible from the kitchen and dining area too — consider how it reads from all angles, not just from the front. Deeper, richer colours tend to anchor the space more effectively than pale neutrals in large open plans.
