A velvet sofa is one of the most striking upholstery choices you can make. Velvet reflects light in a unique way, creating a sense of depth and luxury that no other fabric can match.
What is velvet?
Velvet is a fabric with a dense, even pile cut to a single height. The way it catches the light changes with the direction of the pile — which creates its characteristic “shading” effect.
Advantages of a velvet sofa
- A distinctive look with rich, saturated colours
- Soft and pleasant to the touch
- Modern performance velvets: 50,000–100,000 Martindale rub cycles
Disadvantages and limitations
- Shows pressure marks (due to the direction of the pile)
- Water can leave marks — act immediately
- Needs regular brushing to keep it looking its best
How to clean a velvet sofa
Vacuum in the direction of the pile. For stains, use distilled water (not tap water) and dab gently. Pile marks can be lifted with light steam and a soft brush. Avoid deep steam cleaning and hot water.
