How to style a modular sofa: colour, layout and accessory ideas
A modular sofa is a large, dominant object in any room. How you style it determines whether it feels intentional or incidental.
Start with the sofa colour as your anchor
Neutral anchor (beige, cream, warm white): maximum flexibility. Tonal anchor (stone, slate, taupe): grounding without heaviness. Statement anchor (navy, forest green, terracotta): the room's focal point.
Our Merlot and Malbec collections span all three roles. Order free samples to see them in your room's actual light.
The rug: most important accessory decision
All front legs of every module should sit on the rug. Minimum for a standard L-sofa: 200 × 250cm. Bouclé sofa pairs best with flat-weave rug. Velvet sofa can handle a textured rug.
Cushions: the three-pile rule
Pile 1 (large, close to sofa tone) · Pile 2 (medium, accent colour) · Pile 3 (small, different texture). For a Barolo in warm grey: stone base cushions, deep green contrast, small bouclé texture. Four to six total.
Layout tips
Pull the sofa 30–60cm from the wall. Face light, not screens. Angle chairs at 15–20 degrees for conversation. Our Pinot works exceptionally well in asymmetric arrangements.
Three complete styling approaches
Scandinavian calm: Merlot in Retro Bliss oatmeal, jute rug, oak coffee table, brass arc lamp.
Warm maximalism: Malbec in deep navy, Persian rug in rust and cream, walnut table.
Minimal statement: Pinot in dusty rose, flat-weave rug, marble side table, matte black lamp.
