How to Choose a Truly Comfortable Sofa — 5 Key Criteria

Comment choisir un canapé vraiment confortable — Furni

You can't judge a sofa's comfort by how it looks — or even by a 30-second test in a showroom. Here are the 5 criteria that really determine whether you will still be comfortable three years from now.

1. Foam density

HR35 foam (35 kg/m³, high resilience) keeps its shape for 15–20 years. Budget foam (18–22 kg/m³) sags permanently after 2–3 years. This is the number one factor in long-lasting comfort. Always ask about foam density before you buy.

2. Seat depth

A seat shallower than 55 cm forces you to sit too upright. Deeper than 70 cm without back support and you slide backwards. The ideal depth for most adults is 60–68 cm. If you are tall, go up to 72 cm.

3. Seat height

The ideal seat height is one where your feet rest naturally on the floor and your hips sit slightly above your knees. For most adults, that is 44–48 cm. A low-profile sofa (37–40 cm) suits you if you like to stretch out, but it is less suitable for older people or anyone with joint problems.

4. Backrest quality

A good backrest is firm at the base (for lumbar support) and softer at the top. It should not collapse under your weight. Test it by pressing down firmly from the top: it should push back, not give way.

5. Seat width per person

A minimum of 55 cm per person is standard; 60 cm is comfortable; 65–70 cm is generous. A 3-seater sofa listed at 180 cm = 60 cm per person. At 165 cm, that's 55 cm — acceptable but snug.
