How to Care for Your Sofa: The Complete Care and Protection Guide

A high-quality sofa is an investment that, with the right care, should last 10-15 years or more. Neglect it, and even a premium sofa will deteriorate long before its time -- cushions go flat, fabric pills or stains, and structural parts work loose. The good news is that proper sofa care isn't time-consuming; a few consistent habits make the difference between a sofa that ages gracefully and one that looks tired after five years.

Weekly Care: The Basics

The most important weekly habit is rotating and plumping your cushions. Cushions that are sat on in the same spot every day develop compressed areas. By turning your cushions end to end and front to back each week, you spread the wear evenly and preserve their shape and support. This one habit, which takes about two minutes, adds years to the life of the cushion filling.

Monthly Care: Vacuuming and Inspection

Vacuum your sofa once a month using a soft brush attachment. This removes the dust, crumbs, hair and dirt that build up in the cushion folds and underneath the sofa. Pay attention to the seams between the cushions -- that is where dirt collects and, over time, can cause the fabric to wear.

Stain Removal: Act Immediately

The golden rule of sofa stain removal is to act straight away. The longer a stain sits, the deeper it penetrates the fabric. For most spills: blot (don't rub) with a clean white cloth to soak up as much liquid as possible. Rubbing spreads the stain and damages the fabric fibres. The type of fabric is crucial when treating stains: performance fabrics (polyester, microfibre) respond well to a mild soap solution, while natural fabrics (cotton, linen) require more care.

Protecting Against Sunlight and UV Fading

UV light from direct sunlight fades almost all fabrics over time, and does so unevenly -- the part of the sofa closest to the window fades faster than the shaded areas. If your sofa gets more than two hours of direct sunlight a day, use UV-filtering window film or close the blinds during peak sunlight hours.

Protecting Fabric with a Protective Spray

Fabric protector sprays create an invisible barrier on the surface of the fabric, so liquids bead up and run off instead of being absorbed straight away. Applied correctly, they give you vital seconds -- sometimes minutes -- to blot up spills before they soak in. Apply a protector spray to a new sofa before you first use it, and reapply every 12-18 months.

Annual Deep Clean

Once a year, give your sofa a thorough clean. Remove any machine-washable cushion covers and wash them according to the care label. Vacuum the entire sofa frame, including under the cushions and along every seam. If the fabric isn't machine washable, a professional upholstery clean every 2-3 years is well worth it.

Pet Owners: Extra Precautions

Pet hair embeds itself in fabric fibres and is hard to remove with ordinary vacuuming alone. Use a rubber glove or a slightly damp rubber brush to pull pet hair out of the fabric before vacuuming. Claws can snag fabric fibres, especially on bouclé and velvet -- trimming your pet's claws regularly helps.
