Sofa Arm Styles: Low, High, Slope and Track — Which Suits You?

Sofa arm height and style is one of the most overlooked configuration choices — but it affects how the sofa looks, how comfortable it is to sit at angles, and whether it can function as a lying surface.

The four main arm styles

High arms (70–80 cm): Classic, formal appearance. Excellent back support for side sleepers. Makes the sofa look more substantial. Drawback: limits how the sofa can be repurposed as a lying space — high arms constrain the head position.

Low arms (40–55 cm): Contemporary, minimal appearance. Makes the sofa look wider and lower. Better for lying down fully stretched. The dominant choice in Japandi, Scandinavian and modern interiors. The Furni low arm configuration sits at ~42 cm.

Slope/angled arms: The arm starts lower at the front and rises toward the back. Creates a layered visual effect. Comfortable for resting your arm at varying angles. Popular in mid-century and transitional designs.

Track arms (knife arms): Very thin, straight vertical arm. Clean, architectural, takes up minimal visual and physical space. Makes the sofa appear wider. Common in contemporary and minimalist design.

Which arm height for which use?

If you often nap on the sofa: low or slope arms. If you want classic formality: high arms. If you're maximising the sofa's visual width in a small room: track arms. If you have a longchair configuration: low arm on the longchair end is standard — a high arm there blocks the full lying position.

Arm width matters too

Wide arms (30+ cm) provide a shelf surface for drinks, remotes and books — functional. Narrow arms (under 15 cm) maximise seating width within the overall sofa footprint. In a small room, narrow or track arms can add 10–15 cm of seat per side compared to wide arms.
