The filling inside your sofa cushions determines how it feels to sit on, how long it holds its shape, and how much maintenance it needs. This is one of the most underexplained specifications in furniture retail.
Pure foam cushions
Cheap pure foam is the worst: rigid at first, then permanently flat after 2–3 years. High-quality HR foam (HR35+) is a different story — it maintains its shape for 15+ years. The feel is firm-supportive, which some people love. Furni seat modules use HR35 density foam as standard. The downside of pure foam: it doesn't have the 'sink-in' luxurious feel that feather or hybrid fills offer.
Pure feather/down cushions
Beautiful to sit on, terrible to maintain. Pure feather back cushions require daily plumping — they collapse completely by the end of the day. They're also expensive to clean and can develop an odour over time. Best for people who want a very relaxed, informal look and are willing to do daily maintenance. Not recommended for children.
Foam-wrapped feather (hybrid)
The best of both worlds: a foam core wrapped in a feather envelope. Holds its shape better than pure feather, feels softer and more luxurious than pure foam. This is used in high-end hospitality and quality residential furniture. Our back cushions use foam-wrapped fibre fill, achieving a similar balance.
Foam-wrapped fibre fill
The most practical option: a foam core with a soft fibre (polyester or recycled fibre) wrap. Holds shape well (better than feather), hypoallergenic, easy to clean, no daily plumping needed, lower cost. The trade-off: doesn't feel quite as luxurious as feather wrap.
What we use at Furni
Seat modules: HR35 density foam (firmest, most supportive, longest lasting). Back cushions: foam-wrapped polyester fibre fill. The result is a sofa that requires no maintenance beyond normal use, maintains its shape for over a decade, and doesn't need daily plumping.
