Sofa Delivery and Assembly: What to Expect

Buying a sofa online is simple; getting it into your home and set up in the right spot takes a little more planning. Understanding what to expect from the delivery and assembly process — and how to prepare your space beforehand — makes the whole experience much smoother and spares you the frustration of discovering on delivery day that your new sofa won't fit round a tight bend in the stairs.

How Sofas Are Delivered

Most online sofa retailers offer two levels of delivery: standard delivery (to your door or kerbside) and premium delivery (to the room of your choice, with packaging removed). For anything larger than a two-seater, premium delivery is well worth it. A large corner sofa can weigh 80-120 kg and arrives in several big, awkward boxes — trying to carry these upstairs on your own is genuinely dangerous. The delivery team will also assess the route into your room, something individual customers often overlook until delivery day.

Modular Sofas — from €990
Modular sofas are designed specifically for easy delivery: they arrive in compact sections that can be manoeuvred through narrow corridors, tight stairwells and awkward corners. Each piece connects securely via the integrated locking system — the full configuration can be assembled in under 30 minutes.

Measure Access Routes Before Delivery

Measuring your sofa before you buy is important; measuring the route it has to take is just as important, but often overlooked. Key measurements to take: the width of your front door and every internal door along the way; the width and turning space of hallways; the ceiling height in stairwells (this affects the angle at which long pieces can be tilted to turn on landings); and the dimensions of your lift, if you have one. For a three-seater sofa, you will typically need a clear door width of at least 75-80 cm and a hallway at least 90 cm wide.

Assembly: What to Expect

Most modern sofas — especially sectional and modular designs — are designed for self-assembly without special tools. The typical assembly process involves: attaching the legs (if supplied separately) with the Allen key provided; connecting the modular sections using integrated clips or connectors; slotting in any loose cushions; and moving the sofa into its final position. For a modular corner sofa, assembly usually takes 20-45 minutes with two people. Read the assembly instructions before the delivery team leaves — if any components are missing or damaged, it is much easier to sort out while the delivery team is still there.
