Choosing a sofa for an older adult - or for a home where mobility or comfort needs are a priority - involves different criteria than a standard purchase. Here is what actually matters.

The most important factor: seat height

Getting up from a sofa is significantly harder when the seat is too low. For most older adults, the optimal seat height is 48-52 cm. This is higher than the trendy low-profile sofas (37-42 cm) which look great but are difficult to get up from without assistance. Measure from the floor to the top of the seat cushion - this is the seat height. Avoid anything below 44 cm.

Firmness: supportive without being hard

A sofa that is too soft causes you to sink in, which makes getting up harder. A sofa that is too firm is uncomfortable over time. The right balance: firm base foam (HR35) with a medium-density top layer. The cushion should support your weight without bottoming out.

Seat depth: not too deep

A very deep seat (70+ cm) forces you to either sit far from the backrest or slouch. For older adults, a seat depth of 55-65 cm is generally more appropriate. It allows you to sit with your back against the backrest and feet flat on the floor.

Armrests: firm enough to push off

Armrests should be solid and at the right height to help push yourself up to standing. Standard armrest height above the seat: 22-27 cm. Avoid armrests that are too low, too narrow, or that feel flimsy when you put weight on them.

Fabric: easy to get up from

Getting the sofa in and positioned correctly

The sofa should be positioned so there is clear space on both sides for standing up - ideally at least 60-70 cm on the getting-up side. Placing the sofa against a wall on the standing-up side eliminates the natural push-off movement.
