Best Sofa for Watching TV: Depth, Comfort and Positioning Guide
Watching television is the most common activity performed on a sofa, yet it is rarely the primary criteria people use when choosing one. The result is millions of sofas that are beautiful, well-made, and genuinely uncomfortable for the purpose they are primarily used for. Choosing a sofa specifically optimised for television watching involves a different set of priorities than choosing a sofa for dinner parties or reading.
The Most Important Factor: Seat Depth
Seat depth is the single most important specification for a television sofa. To watch TV comfortably, most people adopt one of two positions: semi-reclined with legs extended along the sofa, or upright with back fully supported and feet on the floor. Both positions require a deeper seat than the average sofa provides. The ideal seat depth for a TV sofa is 60-70 cm measured from the front of the seat cushion to the back cushion. Sofas with seat depths of 50-55 cm -- the standard range for formal living room sofas -- will leave you fighting for a comfortable position within an hour.
Back Height and Support
For television watching, a sofa with a taller back that provides full support to the head and neck is preferable to a low-back design that requires you to hold your head up. A back height of 85-95 cm from the floor (70-80 cm from the seat surface) gives most people full head support. Some television sofas include a headrest or a higher cushion at the top -- these add comfort for extended watching sessions.
Armrest Height and Cushioning
If you tend to lean to one side or lie along the sofa while watching, the armrest becomes a pillow. A wide, well-padded armrest at the right height makes a significant difference to long-session comfort. Look for armrests that are at least 15-20 cm wide across the top and padded with sufficient depth to be genuinely comfortable as a head support when leaning.
Lugano Collection — from EUR 1.190
The Lugano range features the deeper seat profile that makes extended television watching genuinely comfortable. The seat depth allows for the semi-reclined position without feeling perched, and the back height provides full support for most users.
Malbec with Longchair — from EUR 1.590
A sofa with an integrated longchair section is the premium television-watching solution. The longchair provides a dedicated surface for lying fully extended while watching, eliminating the need to drape legs over the armrest or squeeze onto a sofa that is too short to lie on.
The Corner Sofa Advantage for TV Rooms
Corner sofas are excellent for television rooms for several reasons. The chaise section provides a natural lying position for one person while the main sofa section provides upright seating for others -- allowing different members of the household to adopt their preferred viewing position simultaneously. The L-shape also positions everyone in the room facing the same general direction (toward the television in the corner or wall), which is ergonomically more comfortable than a standard sofa where some people are sitting at an angle.
Sofa Positioning Relative to the TV
The optimal viewing distance from sofa to screen depends on television size. As a general rule, the viewing distance should be 1.5-2.5 times the diagonal screen size. For a 55-inch television, the ideal sofa distance is 2.1-3.5 metres. For a 65-inch television, the ideal distance is 2.5-4 metres. At shorter distances, the picture becomes pixelated and eye strain increases; at longer distances, detail is lost and the picture feels disconnected. Position the sofa, not the TV, to hit the ideal distance first.
The Viewing Angle Problem
If your sofa does not face the television directly, you will notice strain on the neck after extended watching. Any angle greater than 30 degrees off-centre from the screen should be corrected by repositioning either the sofa or the television. Corner sofas naturally put viewers at a slight angle -- ensure the television position compensates for this by facing the sitting zone directly.
Cushion Firmness for TV Watching
Soft cushions feel luxurious for the first hour but gradually sink, reducing back support and requiring constant repositioning. Medium-firm cushions hold their position better and provide consistent back support throughout a two-hour film. If you find yourself gravitating toward the edge of your sofa by the end of a film, your cushions are too soft. High-resilience foam cushions at 30+ kg/m3 density maintain their support far longer than standard foam.
