Bouclé has become one of the defining fabric choices of contemporary interior design. Its looped, textured surface creates a warmth and depth that flat weaves cannot replicate, and it photographs beautifully in the kind of natural, Scandinavian-influenced interiors that have dominated social media for several years. But bouclé also has a reputation — sometimes deserved — for being difficult to maintain. Here is everything you need to know to keep a bouclé sofa looking good for years.

Understanding what bouclé is

Bouclé (from the French for "looped") is a fabric characterised by its looped or curled yarn structure. The loops create a textured, slightly irregular surface that feels soft and slightly springy to the touch. Modern bouclé used in furniture is typically a blend of wool, cotton, polyester, or acrylic fibres, with the fibre composition significantly affecting how easy the fabric is to clean and maintain.

The same looped structure that makes bouclé visually appealing also makes it slightly prone to snagging and pilling. Understanding this from the outset means you will approach maintenance with the right expectations.

Regular maintenance: the most important step

The best thing you can do for a bouclé sofa is remove surface dust and loose debris regularly before it works its way into the loops. Use a soft upholstery brush or the upholstery attachment on a vacuum cleaner at low suction. Brush or vacuum in a single direction — with the grain of the fabric rather than against it — to avoid disturbing the loops.

Do this weekly, or at minimum fortnightly, and you will prevent the gradual accumulation of dust that can make light-coloured bouclé look dull over time. This single step accounts for the majority of long-term maintenance.

Dealing with spills immediately

Speed is the most critical factor when a spill happens. Blot — do not rub — with a clean, dry cloth. Rubbing spreads the liquid further into the fabric and can disturb the loop structure, causing permanent damage to the texture.

Once you have blotted as much liquid as possible, dampen a separate clean cloth with cold water and gently blot the area again. For food spills, a drop of mild dish soap diluted in cold water can be applied with a damp cloth, then blotted dry. Always test any cleaning solution on a hidden area first — the underside of a seat cushion is ideal.

Allow the area to dry naturally. Do not use a hair dryer or place the cushion near direct heat, as this can cause the fibres to shrink or the loops to distort.

Dealing with pet hair

Bouclé is one of the more challenging fabrics for pet hair removal. The loops catch and hold hair more effectively than flat weaves. A damp rubber glove run across the surface is one of the most effective methods — the static and friction pull hair free from the loops. Lint rollers work for surface hair but struggle with hair caught deep in the loops.

A soft bristle brush used with short, sweeping strokes in one direction can also be effective. Avoid stiff brushes, which can snag the loops.

What to avoid with bouclé

Never machine wash cushion covers made from bouclé unless the manufacturer explicitly states this is safe. The agitation will cause the loops to felt and mat, permanently changing the texture. Do not use bleach, solvent-based cleaners, or products containing enzymes unless specified as safe for the fabric. Avoid placing a bouclé sofa in direct strong sunlight for extended periods, as prolonged UV exposure can cause fading and fibre degradation over time.

Professional cleaning

For deep cleaning or significant stains that home methods cannot resolve, a professional upholstery cleaner is the right choice. Dry-cleaning methods tend to be safer for bouclé than steam cleaning, as steam can cause shrinkage in some fibre compositions. If you commission professional cleaning, specify that it is bouclé and ask the cleaner to confirm they have experience with the fabric type.

With consistent light maintenance and prompt attention to spills, a good quality bouclé sofa will remain beautiful for many years. The fabric rewards care; it is not inherently fragile, but it does ask more of you than a microfibre or leather alternative.
