A large living room is a gift and a challenge in equal measure. The generous floor space gives you options — but it also means that undersized furniture floats in a visual void, making the room feel cold and under-furnished. A well-chosen corner sofa is often the best solution to anchoring a large living room. It fills space confidently, creates a defined seating zone, and becomes the gravitational centre of the room.

Why a corner sofa works in a large room

A corner sofa does what a standard 3-seater cannot: it occupies a significant footprint, it creates enclosure (which large open rooms often lack), and it seats more people comfortably. In a large room, a sofa that is too small will look lost — the room dwarfs it. A corner sofa gives the room a visual anchor and a human scale. It also defines a living zone within a larger open-plan space, which is particularly important in open-plan layouts where the kitchen, dining, and living areas flow into one another.

What size corner sofa for a large room?

Floating placement: Position the sofa away from walls, with the straight back of the corner sofa defining a visual boundary. This works well in very large rooms (30+ sqm) where a wall-hugging sofa would look lost in the middle distance. Room divider placement: In open-plan spaces, position the sofa so its back faces the kitchen or dining area, using the sofa as a room divider that defines the living zone.

What to put in the corner of a corner sofa

The inner corner of an L-shaped sofa is a design opportunity. Options: a large floor lamp positioned just behind the corner (creates a reading nook); a side table in the corner to hold drinks and remotes; a large statement plant (a fig or palm) positioned in the corner just behind the sofa. Avoid leaving the inner corner empty and unfurnished — it will look unfinished.

Rugs for large living rooms with corner sofas

In a large room, the rug needs to be large enough to anchor the sofa and define the seating zone. For a corner sofa, the rug should sit under at least the front two legs of both sofa sections. A rug that is too small will make the sofa look like it's floating. Typical rug sizes for large living rooms: 240 x 340 cm, 270 x 360 cm, or a bespoke size. Round rugs can work well under corner sofas in particularly large, square rooms.
