Buying a sofa online without sitting on it first is still the thing that gives people pause. But most sofa buying mistakes don't happen because people didn't sit on the sofa — they happen because people bought the wrong size, chose the wrong fabric for their life, or picked a company that wasn't reliable. Here's how to reduce every real risk.
1. Order fabric samples — non-negotiably
Screens lie about colour. A 'cream' on screen can range from cold white to warm biscuit to yellow-cream in real life. Order physical samples and put them in your room at different times of day. This eliminates the #1 online sofa complaint ("it looks nothing like the photo") almost entirely. Most quality manufacturers offer free samples.
2. Tape the dimensions on your floor
Use masking tape to mark out the sofa footprint on your actual floor. Walk around it. Live with it for a day. This is free, takes 10 minutes, and prevents a €2,000 mistake. Also measure your door width — and the staircase if relevant.
3. Read the foam specification, not the marketing
"Premium comfort" and "luxury seating" are meaningless. Ask or look up: what is the foam density? HR30 is good. HR35+ is excellent. Anything under 25 kg/m³ will compress permanently within a few years.
4. Check the guarantee length
1 year = the manufacturer isn't confident. 2 years = minimum acceptable. 5 years = they've done the engineering. A 5-year structural guarantee is a meaningful signal of build quality.
5. Look up delivery reviews specifically
Read reviews that mention delivery, not just the product. Delivery delays, damaged corners, wrong configurations — these are the pain points for online furniture. Check Trustpilot for patterns, not just the headline score.
6. Understand the return policy before you order
Most EU/UK furniture retailers offer 14 days under consumer law, but many exclude custom-ordered items. Understand exactly what the policy covers for your specific configuration before you pay. A 30-day return policy on custom sofas is a strong signal of confidence.
7. Check lead time expectations
Quality sofas made to order take 6–16 weeks. If a brand promises delivery in 2 weeks on a custom sofa, either it's from stock (limited sizes/colours) or the quality corners are being cut. Our typical lead time is 8–12 weeks.
8. Ask the company a specific question before buying
Email or call with a real question — foam density, frame material, specific configuration availability. The response quality (speed, depth, accuracy) tells you more about the company than any marketing page.
