Sofa Size Guide: What Size Sofa Do I Need for My Living Room?
Choosing the right sofa size is one of the most consequential decisions in living room design, and also one of the most commonly misjudged. The most frequent mistake is buying a sofa that is too small for the room — this is counterintuitive, but a small sofa in a large room looks just as wrong as a large sofa in a small room, because the furniture appears to be floating rather than anchoring the space. The second most frequent mistake is buying a sofa without measuring the access route — corners, stairwells, and door widths all need to be checked before purchase, because a sofa that cannot be delivered to the room is useless regardless of how well it fits the space.
Standard Sofa Dimensions
Most 3-seater sofas range from 200cm to 240cm in width, with a seat depth of around 55-65cm and an overall depth (including the back) of 85-100cm. Corner sofas vary significantly in overall footprint depending on their configuration — a typical L-shaped corner sofa will occupy a floor area of roughly 250cm x 200cm, though modular designs can be configured significantly larger or smaller. Seat height typically ranges from 42cm to 50cm — lower seats feel more relaxed and contemporary, higher seats are easier to get in and out of and are often preferred by older users or those with back or knee problems.
How Much Space Do You Need Around a Sofa?
As a general rule, allow at least 45cm between the front edge of your sofa and any opposite furniture (coffee table, other seating, fireplace) — this is the minimum comfortable walkway width. Ideally, 60-75cm is preferable, giving enough space to walk past without turning sideways. Between the sofa and the wall behind it, zero clearance is fine — sofas are routinely pushed flush against walls. Between the sofa and the television, the distance is dictated by screen size: roughly 1.5-2.5 times the diagonal screen measurement is the comfortable viewing distance for most screen sizes.
Merlot 3-Seater Sofa — from EUR 1,090
The Merlot 3-seater is a classic sizing benchmark: a standard 3-seat width that works in most medium living rooms. Its modular construction means it can be reconfigured or extended with additional modules if your space or household changes.
Merlot Corner Sofa with Longchair — from EUR 1,290
The Merlot corner configuration suits larger living rooms where you want the sofa to anchor the space and provide generous seating. The longchair extension adds approximately 80-90cm to the overall length, allowing for stretched-out lounging.
Choosing Sofa Size by Room Size
For rooms under 15m², a 2-seater or compact 3-seater (under 200cm) is usually the right choice — anything larger will dominate the room. For rooms between 15m² and 25m², a standard 3-seater (200-220cm) or a compact corner sofa is appropriate. For rooms over 25m², a large 3-seater, a full corner sofa, or a modular sectional is needed to properly anchor the space. One practical rule: measure the room, then mark out the proposed sofa footprint with masking tape on the floor before purchasing. Walking around the taped outline for a day or two gives a far more accurate sense of whether the size works than any amount of measuring.
Corner Sofas and Sofa Sizes for Specific Needs
If you need a sofa that occasionally sleeps guests, factor in the pull-out bed dimensions, which are typically 10-20cm wider and longer than the sofa footprint, requiring clear floor space in front of the sofa. If you have children or pets, deeper seat cushions (65cm+ depth) are more practical as they accommodate sitting cross-legged or curling up. If you're configuring an open-plan space, a larger sofa of 260cm+ or a corner configuration actually works better than a smaller sofa because it creates a more effective zone division.
