Choosing the wrong sofa size is one of the most expensive and frustrating interior design mistakes you can make. Too large and the sofa dominates the room; too small and it disappears. Getting the sizing right requires measuring twice (and carefully), understanding how sofa dimensions work, and thinking about how the room will actually be used. Measure Your Room — Not Just the Space the Sofa Will Occupy

Before you even look at sofas, get your room dimensions on paper. You need to know the total floor area, the position of doors and windows, and — crucially — the traffic flow paths through the room. The sofa needs to sit within the space while leaving at least 90 cm of clear walkway between the sofa and other furniture or walls. Less than this and the room will feel cramped even if the sofa technically fits.

The Rule of Thirds for Living Room Layouts

A useful guideline is that the sofa should occupy no more than two-thirds of the wall length behind it. If your living room wall is 4 metres long, the sofa (or sofa arrangement) should be no longer than approximately 2.6–2.7 metres. This leaves breathing room at either side and prevents the room from feeling sofa-dominated.

Corner sofa / L-shape: Varies enormously — typically 220–300 cm on the long side and 150–200 cm on the shorter arm. Measure the total footprint including the longchair section, and allow for the sofa to sit 10–15 cm from the wall on each side.

The Tape Test: Do This Before Ordering Any Sofa

Before committing to any sofa purchase, use masking tape on the floor to mark out the exact footprint of the sofa including the depth (front to back), the width, and any side elements. Live with these tape marks for a day. Walk around them, sit in a chair that is positioned where it would be if the sofa were there, and assess the room traffic flow. This simple step prevents expensive mistakes.

Sofa Depth: Often Overlooked

Most people focus on sofa width and forget about depth. Sofa depth (the measurement from the front edge of the seat to the back of the cushion, typically 85–105 cm) determines how the sofa relates to the rest of the room. Deep sofas are more comfortable for lounging but take up significantly more floor space. Shallower sofas (under 90 cm depth) suit smaller rooms and more upright seating postures.

Sofa Height: Matching Proportions to the Room

Low-back sofas (seat height around 38–42 cm, back height around 75–80 cm) make rooms feel larger and suit open-plan spaces and rooms with high ceilings. High-back sofas feel more enveloping and cosy but can visually fill a smaller room. Match the sofa height to the ceiling height — low ceilings call for lower sofas, and high ceilings can carry a more generous back height.

How Many People Do You Need to Seat?

Think about regular use, not just maximum capacity. If three adults live in the home, a 3-seater sofa is the baseline. If you frequently have guests, consider a corner sofa which provides a larger total seating area without necessarily taking up more linear wall space than a sofa plus separate armchair arrangement.
