A 5-seater corner sofa is one of the most searched-for furniture pieces in Europe — and one of the most confusing to buy. Sizes vary wildly between brands, configurations differ, and the difference between a proper 5-seater and something that squeezes 5 people uncomfortably onto it can be thousands of euros. This guide covers everything you need to know.
What does "5 seater corner sofa" actually mean?
The term 5-seater is often used loosely. A true 5-seater corner sofa has enough seat width for five adults to sit comfortably — each needing approximately 55–65 cm of seat width. In practice this means the sofa should have at least 300–320 cm along its longest side, or a combined total seating length of 280+ cm across both legs of the corner.
Be careful of brands that label a sofa as "5-seater" based on the number of cushions rather than actual seated capacity. Always check the dimensions and not just the label.
5-seater corner sofa configurations: L-shape vs U-shape
L-shape (longchair) configuration
An L-shaped 5-seater has a main sofa section plus a longchair (chaise) extension in one direction. Our Merlot and Malbec collections both offer 5-seater L-shape configurations with modular flexibility.
U-shape configuration
A U-shaped sofa wraps around on three sides. True U-shape sofas for 5+ people need a room of at least 4 × 4 metres. See our 5-seater corner sofas and large sofas collection.
What size room do you need for a 5-seater corner sofa?
The general rule: leave at least 40–50 cm between the sofa and the wall behind it, and at least 90 cm of walkway in front of the sofa. For an L-shaped 5-seater approximately 300 × 180 cm, you ideally need a room of at least 4.5 × 3.5 metres.
- Measure the room with masking tape on the floor to visualise the sofa footprint
- Check your doorway width (minimum 80 cm for most corner sofas) and staircase corners
- Consider whether a modular sofa (which disassembles into individual modules) would be easier to deliver into your space
Fabrics for 5-seater corner sofas: what lasts
For a sofa this size used by many people, fabric durability matters enormously. See our bouclé sofas, velvet sofas, and browse all upholstered sofas.
What to look for in construction quality
- Solid wood frames — not MDF or particleboard. Scandinavian beech or pine are industry standards.
- HR (high-resilience) foam — maintains its shape after thousands of compression cycles.
- Sinuous spring base or webbing — provides support under the cushions and prevents sagging.
- Corner joint reinforcement — reinforced metal connectors are a quality signal.
