A fabric sofa is one of the hardest-working pieces of furniture in your home, and keeping it clean is essential for both its appearance and longevity. The good news is that most fabric sofas can be cleaned effectively at home with the right approach and a few basic products. The key is understanding your fabric type and acting quickly on stains before they set.

Check the Cleaning Code First

Before doing anything, find the cleaning label on your sofa (usually under a cushion or on the base) and note the cleaning code. The most common codes are W (clean with water-based products), S (clean with solvent-based products only — no water), W/S (both water and solvent-based products are safe), and X (vacuum only — professional cleaning recommended). Using the wrong type of cleaning product can permanently damage fabric, so this step is essential.

Regular Maintenance: The Most Important Step

The single most effective way to keep a fabric sofa clean is regular vacuuming. Use the upholstery attachment of your vacuum cleaner once a week to remove dust, pet hair, and debris from all surfaces including the back, sides, and under the cushions. This prevents dirt from becoming embedded in the fibres, which makes deep cleaning far more difficult.

How to Remove Common Stains from a Fabric Sofa

Liquid spills (coffee, wine, juice): Act immediately. Blot (never rub) the liquid with a clean white cloth to absorb as much as possible. Mix a small amount of washing-up liquid with cool water, apply to the stain with a clean cloth using a dabbing motion, then blot dry. Repeat until the stain is gone.

Grease and oil: Sprinkle baking soda or cornstarch generously over the stain and leave for 20–30 minutes to absorb the grease. Vacuum away the powder, then treat any remaining mark with a diluted washing-up liquid solution.

Lightly mist the sofa surface, work the product in gently with a soft brush in circular motions, then wipe away with a clean damp cloth. Allow to dry completely — ideally with windows open or a fan on — before using the sofa. Avoid soaking the fabric as this can lead to water marks or mould in the foam padding beneath.

Velvet Sofa Cleaning: Special Care Required

Velvet is one of the most beautiful but most delicate sofa fabrics. Never rub a velvet sofa — always blot. Velvet pile can be crushed permanently by over-wetting or harsh scrubbing. Use a dry powder cleaner or a very lightly dampened cloth, and always brush the velvet pile in one direction after cleaning to restore the nap. For stubborn marks on velvet, professional cleaning is usually the safest approach.

Protecting Your Fabric Sofa After Cleaning

Once clean, apply a fabric protector spray (scotchgard-style) to create a barrier that repels future spills and stains. Reapply every six to twelve months. Rotate cushions regularly so they wear evenly, and consider using removable, washable sofa covers if you have young children or pets that use the sofa frequently.
