Why Corner Sofas Work so Well in Modern Homes
The corner sofa has become the default choice for living rooms across Europe — and for good reason. It solves the most common furniture placement problem: how to seat the most people in a space that flows well and looks intentional. An L-shaped sofa defines a living zone within a larger room without requiring walls to do it and provides far more seating per square metre of floor space than any combination of separate chairs and small sofas.
The Different Types of Corner Sofa
The L-shape is the classic: one long run and one short return at 90 degrees. It works in almost any square or rectangular room. The U-shape adds a second return and creates an enclosed lounge-like atmosphere — best in very large rooms or open-plan spaces where it can define its own zone. The corner sofa with chaise longue is the most popular single configuration: the longchair provides genuine lounging space without the bulk of a full U-shape.

Where to Place a Corner Sofa
The most common placement is pushed into a corner of the room — hence the name. But corner sofas don't have to be in corners. Floating a corner sofa in the middle of a large room with the L-shape facing inward creates a dramatically different room feel and works well in open-plan spaces. When placing against a wall leave at least 5cm gap to protect both the sofa and the wall. Ensure there's at least 90cm of clear space between the sofa and any opposite furniture for comfortable movement.
Choosing the Right Size
The most common corner sofa sizing mistake is buying too small. A corner sofa that's too small for its room floats awkwardly and loses the defining quality that makes it useful. Measure the wall run you intend to place the sofa against then subtract 30–40cm to account for visual breathing room. For most standard living rooms a sofa run of 220–260cm on the longer side is the right range.
