How to Care for Your Sofa: The Complete Maintenance and Protection Guide
A quality sofa is an investment that should last 10-15 years or more with proper care. Neglect it and even a premium sofa deteriorates well before its time -- cushions go flat, fabric pills or stains, and structural elements loosen. The good news is that proper sofa maintenance is not time-consuming; a few consistent habits make the difference between a sofa that ages gracefully and one that looks tired after five years.
Weekly Care: The Basics
The most important weekly habit is rotation and fluffing of cushions. Cushions that are sat on in the same position day after day develop compressed spots. By rotating cushions end-to-end and front-to-back each week -- and fluffing them back into shape if they contain down or fibre -- you distribute the wear evenly and maintain the cushion's shape and support. If your sofa has loose cushions on the seat and back, rotate both. This single habit, taking about two minutes, adds years to the life of the cushion filling.
Monthly Care: Vacuuming and Inspection
Vacuum your sofa monthly using a soft brush attachment. This removes dust, crumbs, hair, and debris that accumulates in the cushion folds and under the sofa base. Pay attention to the seam lines between cushions -- debris collects here and can, over time, cause fabric abrasion. At the same time, inspect the sofa for any loose stitching, starting cushion compression, or any frame movement. Catching issues early means they can be addressed before they become significant problems.
Stain Treatment: Act Fast
The cardinal rule of sofa stain treatment is to act immediately. The longer a stain sits, the more deeply it penetrates the fabric and the harder it becomes to remove. For most spills: blot (do not rub) with a clean white cloth to absorb as much of the liquid as possible. Rubbing spreads the stain and damages fabric fibres. Once the initial liquid is absorbed, treat with a mild, fabric-appropriate cleaner.
Fabric type matters enormously for stain treatment. Performance fabrics (polyester, microfibre): typically respond well to mild dish soap solution or a proprietary fabric cleaner. Apply sparingly, work gently, blot dry. Natural fabrics (cotton, linen): require more caution as they can water-stain or shrink. Test any cleaner in an inconspicuous area first. Velvet: particularly delicate. Blot immediately, do not use water-based cleaners on synthetic velvet without testing first. Use a soft-bristled brush to restore the nap direction after cleaning.
Lugano Collection — from EUR 1.190
The Lugano range uses performance fabrics that are particularly easy to maintain. The tightly woven construction resists staining, cleans easily with a damp cloth, and holds its colour well over years of use.
Merlot Modular Sofa — from EUR 1.490
All Furni sofas come with detailed care instructions specific to the fabric chosen. If you have questions about caring for your Furni sofa, the customer care team is available to advise on specific stain types or maintenance questions.
Protecting Against Sun Fading
UV light from direct sunlight fades almost all fabrics over time, and it does so unevenly -- the section of the sofa closest to the window fades faster than the areas in shadow, creating a visible patch. If your sofa is in direct sunlight for more than two hours a day: use UV-filtering window film or blinds during peak sunlight hours, rotate cushion covers seasonally, and consider a fabric protector spray with UV inhibitors. Lighter-coloured fabrics are more susceptible to yellowing from UV; darker fabrics fade more noticeably.
Protecting the Fabric with a Spray Protector
Fabric protection sprays create an invisible barrier on the fabric surface that causes liquids to bead up rather than absorbing immediately. Applied properly, they give you critical seconds -- sometimes minutes -- to blot a spill before it penetrates. Apply a fabric protector to a new sofa before first use, in a well-ventilated area, following the product instructions carefully. Reapply every 12-18 months. Most fabric protectors work best on performance fabrics; test on natural fabrics in an inconspicuous area first.
Annual Deep Clean
Once a year, give your sofa a thorough clean. Remove all cushion covers that can be machine-washed and follow the care label. Vacuum the entire sofa frame, including under cushions and in every seam. Clean the sofa arms and back, which accumulate skin oils and dust. If the fabric is not machine-washable, professional upholstery cleaning every 2-3 years is worth the investment for a quality sofa.
Pet Owners: Extra Precautions
Pet hair embeds in fabric fibres and is difficult to remove with standard vacuuming alone. Use a rubber glove or a slightly damp rubber brush to physically pull pet hair from the fabric before vacuuming. Pet nails can snag and pull fabric loops -- particularly on bouclé and velvet -- so keeping pet nails trimmed helps. For cats particularly, a scratch deterrent spray applied to the sofa's corners and arms can redirect scratching behaviour to a designated scratching post.
