How to Clean a Sofa: A Complete Guide to Every Fabric Type

Why Regular Sofa Cleaning Matters More Than You Think

Most people only clean their sofa when something is visibly wrong — a stain, a smell, or a guest coming over. In reality, sofas accumulate dust, dead skin cells, pet dander, and microscopic allergens continuously, even if they look clean on the surface. Regular care not only keeps the upholstery looking fresh but significantly extends the life of the fabric. A well-maintained sofa can last 10 to 15 years; a neglected one may look tired and worn in half that time.

Step 1: Check the Care Label

Before applying anything to your sofa, find the care label — usually hidden under a cushion or along the base. The codes tell you what's safe to use: W means water-based cleaners are safe; S means solvent-based cleaners only; WS means both are fine; X means vacuum only, no liquid. Using the wrong cleaner can permanently damage or discolour fabric, so this step is non-negotiable.

Step 2: Vacuum Thoroughly

Remove all cushions and vacuum every surface with an upholstery attachment — top, sides, back, and especially the crevices where crumbs and dust accumulate. This is the single most important regular care task. If you have pets, do this weekly. For households without pets, once every two weeks is sufficient to prevent dust and hair from embedding deeply into the fabric fibres.

Step 3: Spot-Clean Stains Immediately

The faster you act on a spill, the better the outcome. Blot — never rub — fresh spills with a clean dry cloth to absorb as much liquid as possible before it sets. For most fabric sofas, a mild solution of washing-up liquid and lukewarm water applied with a damp cloth works well on food and drink stains. Work from the outside of the stain inward to prevent spreading. Rinse lightly and allow to air-dry completely.

Step 4: Deep Clean Every 3–6 Months

For a deeper clean, a fabric sofa steam cleaner is the most effective tool — the steam kills bacteria and loosens ground-in dirt without saturating the fabric. Alternatively, an upholstery cleaning foam or spray-and-blot cleaner works well for full-surface freshening. For leather sofas, use a dedicated leather conditioner every 3–4 months to prevent cracking and maintain suppleness.

Choosing a Sofa That's Easy to Clean

The easiest sofas to maintain are those with removable, machine-washable covers and tight-weave fabrics that resist staining. When buying a new sofa, ask about the fabric care rating and whether covers are replaceable.
