How to Clean a Fabric Sofa: Step-by-Step Cleaning Guide

Fabric sofas are among the most-used surfaces in any home, and they accumulate dust, body oils, pet hair, food residue and occasional spills over time. Regular cleaning keeps a fabric sofa looking fresh and extends its lifespan significantly — a well-maintained sofa can easily last 15-20 years, while a neglected one may look tired and worn in half that time. The key is understanding which cleaning methods work for which situations, and never using the wrong approach.

Check the Care Label First

Before cleaning any fabric sofa, check the care label — typically found on the underside of the sofa or on a removable cushion cover. The code tells you what cleaning method the manufacturer recommends: W means water-based cleaners are safe; S means solvent-based cleaners only (no water); WS means both are acceptable; X means vacuum only, no liquids. Most modern performance fabric sofas are W or WS rated, which means they can be cleaned with water-based solutions. Never use water on an S-rated sofa — it can permanently damage the fabric.

Lugano Sofa Sand Easy Clean Furni

Lugano Sofa — Sand — from EUR 1.290
The Lugano's performance fabric upholstery is engineered for easy maintenance — the treated surface allows most liquid spills to be blotted and cleaned without leaving permanent marks, and the sand colourway hides everyday dust and minor marks better than lighter fabrics while still feeling open and bright in the room.

Merlot Corner Sofa Furni

Merlot Modular Corner — from EUR 1.490
Modular sofas like the Merlot have a practical cleaning advantage — individual modules can be repositioned to access the back and undersides for thorough vacuuming, and the sections can be separated to clean the gap between them where crumbs and debris tend to collect over time.

Regular Vacuuming: The Most Important Step

The most important fabric sofa maintenance step is regular vacuuming — ideally every one to two weeks. Use the upholstery attachment on your vacuum cleaner and work systematically across all surfaces: back cushions, seat cushions, armrests, and the base. Remove all cushions and vacuum underneath them and in the crevices between sections. Pet hair requires a slightly different approach — a rubber pet hair brush or a damp rubber glove pulled across the fabric will gather pet fur into clumps that can then be picked up or vacuumed.

Treating Fresh Stains

Speed is critical with fresh stains. Blot (never rub) the spill immediately with a clean white cloth or paper towel, working from the outside of the stain inward to prevent spreading. For most water-based spills (coffee, juice, wine), a mild solution of washing-up liquid diluted in water applied with a clean cloth, then blotted dry, is highly effective. For grease-based stains, sprinkle bicarbonate of soda on the stain immediately and leave it to absorb the grease for 15-30 minutes before vacuuming away. Always test any cleaning solution on a hidden area of the sofa first.

Deep Cleaning Your Sofa

A thorough deep clean every six to twelve months keeps a fabric sofa looking at its best. For most performance fabric sofas, a solution of mild upholstery shampoo diluted in warm water can be applied with a soft brush in gentle circular motions, then blotted and allowed to dry. Upholstery steam cleaners are highly effective for deep cleaning fabric sofas — the steam penetrates the fibres, kills bacteria and dust mites, and loosens embedded dirt without oversaturating the fabric. Always allow the sofa to dry completely before replacing cushions and using it.

Preventive Care Tips

Prevention is much easier than treatment. Rotate and flip seat cushions every one to two months to ensure even wear. Keep the sofa out of direct sunlight where possible — UV light fades fabric faster than almost anything else. Consider using a fabric protector spray (always test first on a hidden area) to add a layer of stain resistance to untreated fabrics. If you have pets, a sofa throw over the most-used section of the sofa protects the upholstery and can simply be washed in the machine.
