Cleaning a sofa wrong is worse than not cleaning it at all. The wrong product on the wrong fabric can permanently damage the surface or set a stain instead of removing it. Here's the correct approach by fabric type.
Golden rules for all fabrics
Always blot spills — never rub. Test any cleaning product on a hidden area first. Less moisture is always better. Act fast: most stains become permanent after 24 hours of drying. Use a white cloth to avoid dye transfer.
Velvet (Retro Bliss)
Velvet is sensitive to moisture rings — avoid soaking. For spills: blot immediately with a dry white cloth. For general cleaning: use a dry foam upholstery cleaner or specialist velvet cleaner. Apply to the cloth first, then to the fabric. Once dry, brush in the pile direction to restore texture. Steam cleaning (held at distance) refreshes crushed pile effectively.
Bouclé (Find Me)
The looped texture is relatively forgiving. Blot spills with a clean cloth. For deeper cleaning: mix mild washing-up liquid with cold water, whisk to foam, apply the foam (not the liquid) with a soft brush. Wipe away with a barely-damp cloth. Allow to air-dry fully. Avoid hot air (hairdryers) which can distort the loops.
Performance weave (Melody, Sorriso)
The most forgiving fabric type. Most stains lift with a damp cloth and mild soap. The Sorriso range is stain-treated from the factory — water beads on it. For tougher marks, a diluted upholstery cleaner works well. Many Melody modules can be removed and hand-washed at 30°C — check your specific configuration's care label.
Annual deep cleaning
Once a year, vacuum all surfaces and crevices with an upholstery brush. Turn and flip removable cushions to equalise wear. Check for any loose stitching or snags. Professional cleaning
For built-up soil or persistent stains, a professional upholstery cleaner using dry-cleaning or hot water extraction is a worthwhile annual investment. Cost: €80–200 depending on sofa size. The difference in lifespan can be 5+ years.
