Sofa Back Height: High Back vs Low Back — What's Right for You?

Sofa back height affects three things simultaneously: how the sofa looks in the room, how comfortable it is for different sitting positions, and how much light the sofa blocks in the space. Here's how to think about it.

High back sofas (85–100 cm seat to top of back)

High backs provide full head and neck support when you sit upright. They look substantial and traditional. The downside: in a small or low-ceilinged room, a high-back sofa fills too much vertical space. They also look heavier than they are, which can make a room feel smaller.

Low back sofas (65–80 cm seat to top of back)

Low backs show more wall above the sofa — which makes rooms feel taller and more open. They work especially well in rooms where the sofa is visible from behind (open plan, island placement). The downside: some people find them insufficient for head support. If you regularly fall asleep on the sofa or sit fully upright for long periods, a low back may not be comfortable enough.

Mid-back — the most common choice

Most sofas are mid-back (78–88 cm), which is the best compromise for most households. Enough support for normal sitting, not so tall that the sofa dominates the room. Furni's standard back height fits this range.

Does back height affect sleeping on the sofa?

Yes, but in the opposite direction you might expect. A longchair configuration is the primary sleeping surface on a sofa — and the longchair position doesn't require back height. On the opposite end, a high back actually hinders comfortable lying-down positioning. Low arms + low-to-mid back is optimal for sofa napping.
