Sofa Cushion Filling: Feather, Foam or Fibre?

The cushion filling is what you feel when you sit down - and what you will notice changing over the years. It is not a minor detail. Here is what the main types actually feel like and how they hold up.

Foam only

The firmest, most supportive option. High-density foam (HR35+) holds its shape very well and is the easiest to maintain - just fluff the cushions occasionally. The feeling is firm and consistent. Good choice if you sit upright frequently, work on a laptop on the sofa, or want a sofa that looks neat without constant plumping. Furni uses HR35 foam as the standard cushion core.

Foam + fibre wrap

A foam core wrapped in a layer of hollow-fibre or dacron. Softer feel than pure foam - the fibre wrap gives a slight give when you first sit down. Slightly less structured than pure foam but more comfortable for lounging. The fibre wrap compresses over time and needs occasional fluffing. Most popular combination in quality mid-range to premium sofas.

Foam + feather wrap

The most luxurious and soft feeling. The feather wrap gives a hotel-suite quality sit. However: it requires regular, thorough cushion plumping (daily if you want it to maintain its appearance). Feather fibre migrates through fabric over time and can poke through cheaper covers. Not the right choice if you dislike maintenance or have feather allergies.

Feather only

Very soft, very high maintenance. Common in traditional British sofas and Chesterfields. The plumped look requires daily attention. Feather-only cushions lose their shape significantly over the years. Generally not recommended for modern households that want a lower-maintenance sofa.

Which filling is right for you?

Want minimum maintenance: foam only (HR35). Want softness without too much maintenance: foam + fibre wrap. Want maximum luxury: foam + feather wrap (with commitment to daily plumping). Have feather allergy: foam or foam + synthetic fibre only.
