Sofa leg height is one of those specs most buyers ignore — until they move the sofa in and realize vacuuming under it is impossible, or the proportions feel off with the rest of the room. Here is what it actually changes.
What sofa leg height affects
Seat height (directly), room proportion (visual lightness vs groundedness), ease of cleaning underneath, and — surprisingly — how the sofa feels when you sit down. Shorter legs sit the sofa closer to the floor, which feels more casual and modern. Taller legs create a more traditional, lighter silhouette.
Low legs: 5-10 cm
Creates a grounded, contemporary look. Common in Japandi, Scandinavian and modern minimalist interiors. The sofa sits close to the floor — gives a sense of stability and calm. Downside: harder to clean under; not ideal for people with limited mobility who need to get up easily.
Mid legs: 12-18 cm
The most versatile range. Allows a robot vacuum to run under the sofa. Still looks contemporary but not as low as the minimalist extreme. Works in virtually any interior style — transitional, modern, or slightly traditional.
High legs: 20+ cm
More traditional aesthetic. The sofa looks lighter in the room, which can work well in smaller spaces. Easy to clean under. Common in mid-century modern and classic interior styles.
Seat height = leg height + cushion height
A sofa with 8 cm legs and a 38 cm cushion gives a total seat height of 46 cm — perfectly normal. The same cushion on a sofa with 20 cm legs gives 58 cm — that is a high seat. Before buying, check the total seat height, not just the leg height.
Leg materials
Solid wood (oak, walnut, beech): durable, natural, premium look. Metal (black, brass, chrome): strong, modern. Plastic: common in budget sofas — fine functionally but shows quality difference on inspection. Furni sofas use solid wood legs as standard.
