Most people do not read the sofa warranty until something goes wrong. By that point, they often discover that what voided the warranty was something entirely ordinary. Here is what you actually need to know before buying.
What a good sofa warranty covers
Frame: a quality sofa warranty covers the structural frame against defects and failure for at least 5 years. Some premium manufacturers offer lifetime frame warranties. Foam: coverage against premature compression - meaning the foam loses more than a defined percentage of its height within the warranty period. Joints and fastenings: coverage against delamination, loose joints or structural failures that are not caused by misuse. Stitching: major seam failures not caused by wear are typically covered.
What is typically NOT covered
Normal wear and tear: fabric pilling, gradual foam softening over years, slight colour fading - these are expected and excluded. Misuse damage: sharp objects, deliberate damage, pets scratching fabric. Commercial cleaning products: many warranties specify that using a cleaning agent not approved by the manufacturer voids fabric coverage. This is a common trap - always ask which products are approved before you clean. Water damage: soaking fabric or leaving the sofa in a damp environment is typically excluded.

Practical advice before buying
Ask for the warranty in writing before purchasing. Check whether the warranty is from the retailer or the manufacturer - retailer warranties are only as good as the retailer remaining in business. Check the returns window separately from the warranty - they are different things. The warranty covers defects; the returns window lets you return if you simply change your mind.
