How Long Should a Sofa Last? Complete 2026 Guide

An honest answer: anywhere from 4 to 20 years — and the difference comes down to frame, foam, fabric, and how it's made. Here's what actually matters.

Average sofa lifespan by tier

  • Budget (under €500): 3–5 years
  • Mid-range (€500–€1,200): 7–10 years
  • Quality or factory-direct: 12–20 years

Factor 1: The frame

Solid beech or Scandinavian pine with reinforced joints. Avoid particleboard and MDF — they warp and crack under regular loading within 3–4 years. All Merlot, Malbec and Barolo sofas use Scandinavian pine frames.

Factor 2: Foam density

Seat cushions need HR foam at minimum 35 kg/m³. Below 28 kg/m³ permanently deforms within 12–18 months of regular use. Our modular sofas use HR 35/38 foam throughout.

Factor 3: Fabric durability

Look for the Martindale rub test — minimum 20,000 rubs for domestic use, 30,000+ for heavy use. Check the full fabric range with test ratings.

Factor 4: Care routine

Weekly vacuuming, immediate blot on spills (never rub), monthly cushion rotation. The right routine adds 3–5 years to any sofa.

The modular advantage: replaceability

The biggest reason modular sofas outlast traditional ones: when one section wears, you replace that module — not the whole sofa. Merlot and Malbec modules are kept in permanent production, so you can order a matching replacement module 5+ years after your original purchase.
