Loveseats & Small 2-Seater Sofas: Buying Guide 2026 (Sizes, Configurations, Furni Models)

Loveseat and small 2-seater sofa buying guide – compact Furni sofa in a small living room

A loveseat – or, as most of Europe calls it, a small 2-seater sofa – is the piece that makes a studio apartment, a narrow living room or a bedroom reading corner feel finished rather than cramped. The catch is that "small sofa" covers everything from a 130 cm two-cushion loveseat to a 230 cm two-seater with wide arms, and the wrong pick either swallows the room or leaves it looking unfurnished. This guide walks through the real dimensions, the configurations worth considering, and the compact Furni models we would recommend for each situation.

What is a loveseat, and how is it different from a small sofa?

Strictly speaking, a loveseat is a two-person seat, originally an S-shaped chair for conversation and today simply a sofa built for two. In the UK and across Europe the same piece is sold as a 2-seater sofa, a small sofa or a compact sofa. In practice the differences come down to width and intent:

  • Loveseat (130–170 cm): two cushions, intimate seating, often the only sofa in a small room or a companion to a larger sofa.
  • Small 2-seater sofa (170–200 cm): two generous seats or a tight three; the everyday sofa for a one- or two-person household.
  • Mini sofa / settee (under 130 cm): closer to a wide armchair – bedrooms, hallways, dressing rooms.
  • Minimal sofa: less about size, more about silhouette – low back, slim or no arms, visible legs. A minimal sofa can be a loveseat, but it does not have to be.

If you are torn between two and three seats, our 2-seater vs 3-seater sofa guide has the room-size maths; and if the question is loveseat or sofa rather than which loveseat, start with Loveseat vs sofa: which is right for small spaces.

Small sofa sizes: the numbers that matter

Width gets all the attention, but four measurements decide whether a small couch actually works in your room.

Measurement Typical range Why it matters in a small room
Overall width 130–200 cm Leave 40–45 cm free on each side for walkways and visual breathing room.
Depth 85–112 cm The dimension people forget. A 95 cm sofa in a 3 m wide room leaves 2 m of floor; a 112 cm lounge sofa leaves less than 1.9 m.
Seat height 40–46 cm Lower reads lighter and more "minimal"; 44–46 cm is easier to get up from.
Back height 67–85 cm A back under 70 cm keeps window sills and wall art visible – the single biggest trick for making a studio feel bigger.
Arm width 5–25 cm per side Slim or low arms can save 20–40 cm of total width for the same seat space.

A useful rule: measure the wall, subtract 90 cm for clearance, and that is your maximum sofa width. In a 12 m² studio living zone that usually lands between 170 and 200 cm – larger than most people expect, which is why a well-proportioned 2-seater often beats a tiny loveseat that looks lost.

Loveseat configurations: which shape suits your space?

1. Classic two-arm loveseat

The default. Symmetrical, easy to place against a wall or floating behind a dining table. Choose high arms if you like to lean, low arms if you want the sofa to feel open and lounge-like.

2. Armless or single-arm 2-seater

Dropping one or both arms saves width and lets the sofa sit flush against a wall or window. A single high arm on the window side with an open end towards the room is a classic studio-apartment move.

3. Compact corner sofa with chaise

Two seats plus a short chaise (longchair) at one end. At roughly 190–215 cm wide and 160–185 cm deep it fits where an L-shaped three-seater would not, and gives one person a place to lie down. Our longchair sofa guide explains left- vs right-hand chaises.

4. Modular two-seater that grows later

Start with two seat modules and an arm or two; add a chaise, an extra seat or a corner element when you move to a bigger flat. For renters this is the configuration with the longest useful life, and it is the backbone of Furni's modular sofas.

5. Small sofa bed

If the loveseat has to double as the guest bed, you are usually looking at a compact 3-seater with a pull-out mechanism rather than a true loveseat – the bed width needs it. See our sofa beds.

The best small sofas at Furni, by situation

For a studio apartment: PINOT 2-seater

At 190 cm wide and only 67 cm high, the PINOT keeps sight lines open across a one-room flat – the window stays visible, the room stays bright. The 43 cm seat is low enough to look relaxed but not so low that getting up becomes a workout. Dark grey or navy Retro Bliss hides everyday life well; beige keeps a studio feeling airy.

For a small living room that still wants proper comfort: BAROLO 2-seater

The BAROLO 2-seater is 214 cm wide with slim or headrest arms (234 cm with the wide arm), 87 cm deep and 82 cm high. The slim arm gives you two generous seats in the footprint most 3-seaters need for their arms alone; the headrest version is the one to choose if you watch films on it every evening. Melody fabric in beige, light beige, greige or taupe. There is also a BAROLO 2-seater with low armrests for a more open, lounge look.

For a minimal, Japandi-style room: MERLOT compact build

MERLOT is a 70 cm high modular system with a deep 111 cm seat. The armless MERLOT 3-seater is 212 cm wide – effectively a very roomy loveseat for two who like to lounge – and it comes in eleven fabrics including brown bouclé and brick-red chenille. If you prefer arms, the MERLOT armchair with high armrests (182 cm) is a genuine one-and-a-half-seater and the smallest "sofa" in the range. Read more in our high back vs low back sofa guide.

For two plus a place to stretch out: compact corner with chaise

The PINOT corner sofa with chaise stays at 190 cm wide and adds a 167 cm deep longchair – a two-seater footprint along the wall with a lie-down spot into the room. Choose left- or right-hand to suit your door and window positions.

For a small flat that hosts guests: RIVA

The RIVA 3-seater with pull-out bed is the compact sofa bed option: two elements for easy delivery up narrow stairs, a bedding box underneath and a proper sleeping surface when friends stay over.

How to choose a loveseat or small sofa: the checklist

  1. Measure the wall, then subtract 90 cm. That is your maximum width. Tape the footprint on the floor, including depth.
  2. Check the route in. Door widths, stair turns and lift dimensions. Two-element and modular sofas solve this; a one-piece 200 cm sofa may not.
  3. Decide how you actually sit. Upright with a laptop? Choose a shallower seat (85–95 cm depth) and a higher back. Curled up for films? Go deeper (110 cm) and lower.
  4. Pick the arm style deliberately. Slim or low arms save width and look lighter; high arms add armchair-like support and a cosier feel.
  5. Keep the back low in a studio. Under 70 cm keeps windows and wall space visible and makes the room feel larger.
  6. Choose a fabric for the life you have. Chenilles such as Retro Bliss and Golden are rated for heavy everyday use; Sorriso is the pet-friendly option; bouclé adds texture to a plain room. All Furni fabrics are OEKO-TEX certified – order free samples before you decide.
  7. Think two moves ahead. A modular loveseat can become a three-seater or a corner sofa when you move – usually cheaper than buying twice.
  8. Read the small print. Furni delivers free across the EU and UK, offers 30-day returns and a 2-year warranty, and is rated 4.8 on Trustpilot – the things that matter when a sofa arrives in a fourth-floor walk-up.

Styling a small sofa so the room feels bigger

Float the loveseat a few centimetres off the wall, pair it with one armchair rather than a second sofa, choose a round coffee table so there are no corners in the walkway, and let the rug run at least 20 cm beyond the sofa on both sides. Keep the sofa close to the wall colour if you want it to recede – our beige sofa styling guide covers the neutral route.

Frequently asked questions

What size is a loveseat?

Most loveseats are 130–170 cm wide and 85–100 cm deep. Anything up to about 200 cm is still sold as a 2-seater or small sofa. Furni's most compact loveseat, the PINOT 2-seater, is 190 × 95 cm.

Is a loveseat the same as a 2-seater sofa?

Essentially yes. "Loveseat" is the North American term; in the UK and the EU the same piece is called a 2-seater sofa, small sofa or compact sofa. Some retailers reserve "loveseat" for the smaller end of the range (under 160 cm).

What is the best sofa for a studio apartment?

A low-backed 2-seater between 170 and 200 cm wide, ideally with slim or single arms so it can sit flush against a wall or window. If guests stay over, a compact two-element sofa bed such as RIVA is the better compromise.

Can two adults comfortably sit on a small sofa?

Yes, provided each seat is at least 55–60 cm wide. A 190 cm sofa with slim arms gives roughly 80 cm per person; a 150 cm loveseat with wide arms may give only 50 cm, which feels tight for two adults over an evening.

Do small sofas come in modular versions?

They do – and it is the smartest buy for renters. Furni's PINOT, MERLOT, MALBEC and BAROLO systems all start as a 2-seater and can be extended with a chaise, an extra seat or a corner module later, in the same fabric.
